Understanding the Connection between the Spine and the Rest of Your Body

    Last updated 1 year ago

The spine is made up of a series of vertebrae that protect the spinal cord from injury. The spinal cord contains nerves that travel all over the body and send vital information to and from the brain. This network of nerves ensures that the heart pumps, the lungs breathe, the legs move, and the stomach digests. The spinal cord also affects the nervous system and immune function. To learn more about the connection between the spine and the body, keep reading.

    The Upper Body

The nerves that control one’s food sensitivity, sinuses, diaphragm, and thyroid are connected to the spinal cord. You’ll also find the nerves that handle sugar and control pain and sensitivity in the spine. This means that when you lift a heavy object, consume food, or sneeze, the corresponding nerves in your spine react or trigger the reaction.

    The Middle Body

The areas of the middle body are also controlled by nerves that connect to the spine, including the stomach, liver, heart, lungs, pancreas, spleen, small intestine, kidney, and bladder. In general, it’s sufficient to say that all of the major and minor organs of the body are controlled by nerves that travel to the spine.

    The Lower Body

As for the lower bodily functions, nerves that are linked to the spine also control colon, prostate, and uterus function. Furthermore, reproductive organs and the nerves that control the hips and legs are attached to the spinal cord.

    Watch: What is Subluxation?

    Last updated 1 year ago

The spine is made up of vertebrae and contains the spinal cord, which is the main conduit through which information travels from the brain to other areas of the body, such as the heart and lungs. Sometimes, vertebrae can shift, pinching the nerves that come from the spinal cord, thereby interfering with the messages traveling from the brain, through the spinal cord and nerves, and to organs of the body. When this occurs, the patient is suffering from a subluxation and may need chiropractic care.

In this video, a spine specialist demonstrates what exactly occurs when a patient has a subluxation of the spine. She explains how the vertebrae pinch the nerve and how that pinched nerve may affect other areas of the body. To learn more, watch the full clip.

Call WellnessOne of Bellevue for more information on subluxation and ways to treat this injury. We specialize in chiropractic solutions to help heal neck and spine injuries and improve the body’s overall function. To learn more about how we can help you, call us at (888) 815-2193 today.
